Allium ‘Gladiator’ is a striking ornamental onion cultivar renowned for its large, spherical umbels composed of numerous star-shaped, violet-purple flowers. Blooming in early to midsummer, typically from June to July, these impressive flower heads create a dramatic focal point in borders and mixed perennial beds. The plant’s sturdy stems rise to a height of 90 – 120 cm (36 – 48 inches), providing an architectural element to garden designs. Narrow, strap-like foliage emerges in spring and usually withers as the flowers bloom, allowing the spectacular inflorescences to take center stage. Thriving in full sun with well-drained, moderately fertile soil, ‘Gladiator’ is drought tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance. Its long-lasting blooms attract pollinators including bees and butterflies, enhancing garden biodiversity. Not native to the UK, this hybrid cultivar is widely cultivated for its ornamental value and has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
